Internship in Environmental Policy

What to Expect

SKAT is an owner-operated Swiss company specialising in international cooperation. SKAT supports governments, the private sector and civil society in Switzerland and around the globe in improving lives by facilitating lasting solutions in Water, Energy, Building and Governance.

The goal of this internship is to support Skat Consulting in systematically reviewing methods and tools that translate the non-tangible value of ecosystem services provided by water bodies and rivers into monetary terms — can be translated into economic value.

Building on this review, you will contribute to the development of a simple and practical framework for cost-benefit analysis in river restoration projects. The work will directly support the planning of water body restoration programmes within river basin management plans, and contribute to making the case for investment in nature-based solutions from an economic perspective.

Main Tasks:

  • Conduct a broad literature review of studies and methods that assign monetary values to ecosystem services of rivers, wetlands and other water bodies (e.g., willingness-to-pay surveys, contingent valuation, ecosystem service accounting frameworks).
  • Identify and compare existing decision-support tools and frameworks for cost-benefit analysis in river restoration and NbS projects.
  • Analyse how non-tangible values (biodiversity, recreation, cultural services, flood regulation) are currently being quantified and communicated to decision-makers.
  • Develop a simple, practical framework or tool for cost-benefit analysis that incorporates ecosystem service values into river restoration project appraisals.
  • Produce a structured report summarising findings and providing actionable recommendations for practitioners.

Your Profile:

  • Currently enrolled as a student in a university in Lebanon
  • Background or strong interest in environmental economics, development studies, political science, international relations, or related fields
  • Ability to work independently in a remote setting
  • Good knowledge of English (written and spoken)
  • Familiarity with academic literature search, referencing, and structured reporting

What we Offer:

  • A full-time, paid remote internship
  • Duration: 3 months from June to August 2026
  • Opportunity to gain practical experience and international exposure working with a Swiss organisation
  • Mentoring and regular check-ins through Remote Roots
