What to Expect

Geo Expertise is an association founded in 2010 and based in Geneva, Switzerland. It works with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to support decision making, project design and implementation in the fields of natural resources management, social and economic research, and human rights monitoring.

This research internship focuses on water governance developments in the Orontes River Basin following political changes in Syria and the potential impacts on water management, agricultural water use, and transboundary cooperation with Lebanon. In a context of strong pressure on water resources, informal exploitation practices, and complex cross-border dynamics, the project examines environmental sustainability and socio-economic stability in border regions.

The internship follows a multidisciplinary approach combining political science and social sciences. As an intern, you will conduct background research and literature reviews, and contribute to analysing political and social developments related to water governance. You will work on topics including political transformations and their effects on water relations, water use practices and local actor dynamics, inequalities in access to water resources, and opportunities for cross-border cooperation. Academic guidance and methodological support will be provided throughout the internship.

Your Profile:

• Currently enrolled as a student in a university in Lebanon
• Background or strong interest in political science, social sciences, international relations, environmental studies or related fields
• Strong research and analytical skills
• Interest in water governance, regional dynamics, and interdisciplinary research
• Ability to work independently in a remote setting
• Good written English
